The Swatch Group has inked an exclusive agreement with Liquidmetal Technologies that will see its lines feature a new amorphous alloy.
A combination of a zirconium-based alloy and ceramics, the alloy features an amorphous atomic structure that can be processed like plastic and has unique properties when it comes to forming.
To form a bezel, ceramic rings are heated to 1400 C, creating a material so hard, it requires an 8000-watt laser to cut it. Next, it is combined with heat-flattened liquid metal under the pressure of five tonnes, creating a seamlessly bonded bezel that will retain its appearance indefinitely.
The alloy was first used in the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean’s bezel in 2009 and last year in Breguet’s Reveil Musical.
The Swatch Group is made up of 19 watch brands including Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Tiffany & Co., Longines, Rado, Tissot, cK Watch & Jewelry, Swatch, and Hamilton.
