‘Canoe’ by Canadian jewellery designer Reena Ahluwalia is symbolic of voyage, harmony with nature, and discovery.
Jewellery designer Reena Ahluwalia is one of nine winners of Rio Tinto Diamonds’ Global Design Competition.

Inspired by the image of a canoe on an icy lake, ‘Canoe’ took top honours in the ‘Canadian Diamonds’ category with its symbolism of voyage, discovery, harmony with nature, and courage.

Ahluwalia was out of the country and unavailable for comment.

A panel of eight judges from the fashion and jewellery industries pored over a record number of entries from the United States, Australia, India, China, Canada, and Hong Kong. Designs ranged from classic pieces to contemporary interpretations, many of them centring on nature and the elements. The other categories were ‘Champagne,’ ‘Silvermist,’ and ‘Sustainable Jewellery.’

“We were delighted with the level of interest in the competition from all over the world and we look forward to working with the winning designers to showcase their creativity,” said Rebecca Foerster, manager of Rio Tinto Diamonds’ U.S. office.

The nine winning designers will receive significant exposure in the United States, including having their designs showcased at the 2012 Academy Awards in February.
