The steel structure for BaselWorld’s new exhibition space is now in place.

Construction of BaselWorld’s new exhibition space is on schedule, with crews erecting the steel structure that will cover Exhibition Square.

At a height of 32 m, the 141,000-m2 hall is expected to be completed by the start of BaselWorld 2013 and is similar in concept and appearance to the existing Hall 1. The new space encompasses two 8-m high exhibition storeys that will sit atop the 10-m high ‘City Lounge.’

A total of 2600 tonnes of steel girders have been welded and bolted together since September. More than 2300 tonnes of concrete slabs have been installed for the hall’s floor.

Work continues on installing the roof, as well as the building’s shell and technical systems.

Following BaselWorld 2012, crews will demolish and rebuild Hall 3, along with the front section of Hall 1.

According to show officials, construction will not affect BaselWorld 2012, with all halls and hall entrances remaining as in previous years.
