Tom Weishaar, JB’s bench tips writer, won for this ring at Jewelers of America’s (JA’s) Case Awards in the ‘Buyers’ Choice’ category. Co-designed with Craig Underwood of Underwood’s Fine Jewelers in Fayetteville, Ark.
Jewellery Business bench columnist Tom Weishaar has picked up one of the top honours at Jewelers of America’s (JA’s) Case Awards.

Co-designed with Craig Underwood of Underwood’s Fine Jewelers in Fayetteville, Ark., the platinum and rose gold ring with 2.13-carat centre was named ‘Buyers’ Choice’ in the ‘Entry Platinum Jewellery’ category. The piece also features 54 round full-cut white diamonds and two round natural pink diamonds.

Weishaar says competitions like this one can lead to opportunities beyond the bench.

“Winning competitions has been a huge boost for my personal career,” he says. “The recognition has led to opportunities to present lectures, as well as invitations to write articles for various jewellery publications, my personal favourite being Jewellery Business.

“In addition, my employer, Underwoods, has advertised the awards, which has had the effect of elevating the store’s reputation and the clients it serves. Entering design contests raises your level of excellence. You have to create really well-made pieces if you are to have any chance of winning, and working to that level benefits you and your customers.”

The Case Awards is open to JA retail members and recognizes creativity, artistry, style, and excellence in jewellery design. This year, 61 entries were received, the most in the competition’s history.
