CJA alerts trade to suspect conference

The Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) is warning its members to be cautious of a Shanghai-based conference that may not be what it claims.

Entitled “Asia Diamond Trading & Investment Summit 2012,” the conference is being organized by a group called ‘Broaders,’ with dates lined up for Oct. 25 and 26 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Shanghai, Pudong.

A prospectus for the event indicates Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO (The World Jewellery Confederation), is scheduled to appear as a speaker. However, according to CJA, Cavalieri has not been approached to participate.

“While CIBJO has no specific information about the organizer and/or the event, what they definitely do know is that Dr. Cavalieri was never approached to be a speaker, and therefore, it goes without saying he never agreed that his name be listed,” says David Ritter, CJA president and chief executive officer (CEO). “CIBJO has sent a request that his name be removed from the list immediately. For anybody who may be considering attending this specific event, CIBJO urges that you practice caution before booking your place.”
