The fight against crime in Durham got its turn in the spotlight, as Jewellers Vigilance Canada (JVC) and Jewelers Mutual celebrated officers for their work on cases involving the jewellery community.
In one incident last September, two suspects armed with handguns and hammers entered a jewellery store in Oshawa, Ont., smashing showcases and stealing a large amount of jewellery. Police say a beating caught on video of an assault with a hammer on the store’s owner and another employee was the most vicious they had seen. The victims were taken to hospital where they were treated and later released.
Officers spent days following leads that in some cases, took them out of the province. Several weeks later, police arrested one of the suspects and an accomplice. The other suspect is still wanted on a warrant, and some of the jewellery has been recovered.
“The investigation was an example of the professionalism, dedication, and long hours of hard work (that keep the officers from their families) required to solve cases such as these,” said JVC in a news release. “It also demonstrates the power of networking in solving crimes.”
