CIBJO reports on precious metals

The countdown to the opening of the 2016 CIBJO Congress in Yerevan, Armenia continues. Just a month before the opening, CIBJO  Precious Metals Commission has released their special report.  Headed by Stella Layton, the report examines the subjects of nickel release testing and conflict minerals legislation in the European Union.

One of the main focuses of the report is compliance with the European Union’s REACH regulations. REACH is intended to protect both human health and the environment from the harmful effects of chemicals. Specifically, REACH tests the release of nickel in jewellery after prolonged contact with the skin.

Additionally, CIBJO’s report addresses the progress on a long-awaiting law in the European Union to prevent minerals associated with conflict from entering legitimate trade. It will monitor key junctures in the process, specifically regulating smelters, refiners, and direct importers. This law is intended to cover the trade of tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold.

The CIBJO Congress will take place October 26-28 2016, hosted by the Armenian Jewellers Association.
