A diamond that is among the largest found in recorded history has been uncovered at a Canadian-run mine in Botswana.

The 1758-carat stone, which weighs nearly 352 grams (12.4 ounces), was recovered from Lucara’s Karowe Diamond Mine and is the largest diamond ever found in Botswana.

The stone is the latest in a series of impressive finds for the Vancouver-based company. Since introducing its XRT diamond recovery technology in 2015, Lucara has recovered 12 diamonds larger than 300 carats at Karowe, including two larger than 1000 carats.

“Lucara’s technologically advanced XRT diamond recovery circuit has once again delivered historic results,” said company CEO Eira Thomas. “Karowe has now produced two diamonds greater than 1000 carats in just four years, affirming the coarse nature of the resource and the likelihood of recovering additional, large, high quality diamonds in the future, particularly as we mine deeper in the orebody and gain access to the geologically favourable EM/PK(S) unit.”

Further analysis of the discovery is ongoing.
