When it comes to coloured diamonds, pink is certainly looking pretty.

This is according to a new report from the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF), which details the results of the Fancy Color Diamond Index (FCDI) in 2019, as well as over the last decade.

The index, which is based on pricing details collected for blue, pink, and yellow diamonds traded in Hong Kong, New York, and Tel Aviv, showed a 116 per cent appreciation in the price of pink diamonds from 2010 to 2019.

Overall, coloured diamonds enjoyed a steady market price increase of 77 per cent in the past 10 years, with an 81 per cent rise in the price of blues and 21 per cent jump for yellows.

However, despite these long-term highs, 2019 saw a 1.4 per cent decrease in the general index, which FCRF attributes to a 5.4 per cent decrease in the price of yellow diamonds.

“The declines we witnessed in 2019 in the fancy colour index are a ripple effect caused by the double digit decrease in the colourless category in the last few years,” says FCRF advisory board member, Jim Pounds. “From the mining perspective, we are currently experiencing a shortage in high quality fancy colour rough, and we therefore feel quite optimistic about the future.”
