Canada’s proposed duty hike challenged by CJA

In wake of Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA’s) proposed regulatory amendments—which, if implemented, would significantly increase customs duties, taxes, and compliance costs on imported goods—the Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) is fighting in support of the Canadian jewellery industry.

“Some of you may be aware that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has proposed regulatory amendments that, if implemented, would significantly increase customs duties, taxes, and compliance costs on imported goods,” the group shared in an email. “These changes are expected to affect all our members—not only importers.”

Given the CBSA is currently conducting a public consultation on the proposed amendments, the CJA has, behalf of the membership, prepared draft comments opposing the amendments in their current form.

“As the voice of the jewellery and watch industry, the Canadian Jewellers Association has been following these developments closely,” the group said. “We are concerned that some members may not be aware of the proposed regulatory amendments and the impacts these amendments will have on their businesses.”

CJA members are also invited to partake in a webinar (presented by Bennett Jones, LLP) to learn more about these changes and the impact they may have on the Canadian jewellery industry.

The webinar will take place July 21 from 3 to 4 p.m. EST. To register, contact info@canadianjewellers.com.
