Fall—that magical time of year when the world pays close attention to the latest trends and shops are packed with people seeking fashionable styles to reinvent their wardrobes. Consumer magazines’ fall issues are at their thickest, becoming fashion bibles and coffee table accessories for months to come. Fall is also the time when people begin developing their shopping list for the holiday season, both in what they will offer to those they love and hope to receive in return. As such, fall is when jewellers should examine their inventory and begin laying the foundation for the holiday season. Here are a few of the top trends for fall/winter:
Studs are appealing to women of all ages because they are comfortable, wearable, and fun. Diamond stud earrings will always have their place, but the on-ear trend here takes on a larger and more interesting persona. Simple shapes are versatile and can be worn every day. Hot styles include: bar studs (i.e. small metal or gemstone studs running north/south), crescent moons, stars, bows, and wings. Oversized studs are also popular and styles include larger-than-normal gem studs, pearls, and bold clusters of colourful stones.

Uncertain economic times equal consumers focused on getting the most for their money. Jewellery that can be worn multiple ways allows them to do just that. Stars of the convertible jewellery trend are long necklaces that can be wrapped, tied, or worn long. Also consider ornamental links allowing the wearer to convert bracelets to necklaces or simple chains to stunning designs. Earring jackets are another great way to give modest stud earrings a bold new look.
Slenderizing in their shape and daring in their designs, elongated pendants, earrings, and rings are the shape style of the season. TrendVision Jewellery + Forecasting Trendbook taps elongated pendants, cascading earrings, and long knuckle rings as a few of the best silhouettes for 2015 and beyond. For necklaces, look for long teardrop-shape pendants and dripping ‘Y’ designs. Elongated gemstone drops and cascading chains are two styles to consider for earrings, as they frame and flatter the face. There are two popular elongated ring designs offering a little something for every sense of style: oval or marquis-shape gemstones and bold knuckle rings that run vertically up the finger.
We’re not talking about your grandma’s pearls. Look for styles that make pearls less formal and more fashion-forward. Large-millimetre baroque bracelets in a variety of hues look great alone or stacked. Oversized front-back studs go from the office to evening wear with ease. Long strands of affordable freshwater cultured pearls can be wrapped and worn countless ways, making them also part of the ‘convertible’ trend. Tahitian pearls’ rich grey colour is chic for the cooler weather months.
To appeal to younger generations, designers are proving fine jewellery doesn’t have to be high end. In fact, they are mixing precious and less precious materials to have mass appeal to millennials and new demographics of customers. Leather cords pair perfectly with gold links and ornate clasps, while ceramic bangles are accented with diamonds and colourful pavé gemstone details. In addition to mixing materials, textured links are paired with polished ones to offer contrast and visual interest in necklaces and bracelets. Silver is mixed with yellow gold for high-contrast earrings and necklaces.
For many, travelling far and wide is a way of being.
As such, ethnic inspirations are defining mosaic designs worth investing in. TrendVision identifies ‘avant-garde exoticism’ as a top trend for 2015 and beyond. High-karat yellow gold is the metal of choice, as it accents gemstones and rose-cut diamonds that make up intricate mosaics. Enamel becomes wearable art with pendants and earrings.
