Perpetual change: Zilberschmuck artists interpret ‘transformation’

This year, 85 artists from across the country submitted 68 entries for the juried exhibition, which was on display at the Zilberschmuck gallery in May.

Metal artist Vivienne Jones, goldsmith Van McKenzie, and this article’s author served as judges, narrowing the field of entries to 40 designs from 33 artists.

The contest’s theme of ‘transformation’ carried slightly more meaning this year. Fraser announced at press time the gallery would be closing after several years at its current location, citing on-going road construction and a lack of client traffic.

“There were a lot of wonderful things that came out of Zilberschmuck, but I think you just have to embrace change,” Fraser says, adding she has not ruled out continuing to hold the contest.

“If we can find a venue that will host the exhibition, then I’ll consider it. I’m not giving up.”
