2016 MGJ conference set for Spain

SB_bigstock-Square-In-ValenThe success of the inaugural Mediterranean Gem and Jewellery Conference (MGJ) held in Greece has organizers planning a similar event in Valencia, Spain, next May.

The conference—which ran from June 27 to 28—featured an international line-up of experts in synthetic diamond production and treatments, while gem lab scientists covered their screening and detection.

Specific topics included:

• an update on the production of synthetic high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamonds and how to identify them;

• a comparison of the characteristics and value of Mozambique rubies versus their Burmese counterparts;

• production, gemmological characteristics, and value of Argyle coloured diamonds; and

• methods for detecting small CVD and HPHT synthetics.

Participants were also treated to a 3D movie experience of a Burmese ruby mine.

The conference is organized by Independent Gemological Laboratory (Greece); CGL-Swiss Canadian Gem Lab Inc. (Canada); the Association of Independent Jewellery Valuers (United Kingdom); and the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (United States).

Held in a different Mediterranean location every year, the conference will take place in Valencia from May 7 to 8 and will be organized in conjunction with local gem lab, MLLOPIS.
