Five people have been arrested after a botched robbery attempt at a jewellery store in Markham, Ont. The incident unfolded near Denison Street and Kennedy Road, where police responded to reports of suspicious activity involving two vehicles. One vehicle acted as a lookout while the second dropped off four suspects near the store.

Armed with sledgehammers and garbage bags, the group tried to approach the store, but their plan fell apart when they realized the business had already closed for the day. Frustrated, the suspects quickly fled, with three of them returning to the lookout vehicle.

Police quickly launched a coordinated response, utilizing the Emergency Response, Canine, and Air Support units. After a brief foot chase, the police managed to apprehend all five suspects. A replica firearm and a stolen vehicle were recovered during the arrest.

One of the suspects remains at large. Investigators believe the group may be responsible for other criminal activities and have released photos of the suspects to gather more information. A video of the brazen attempted robbery has also been released to the public.

York Regional Police, in a statement, also offered safety advice to jewellery business owners and employees :

  • Install and regularly maintain security systems, including alarms and surveillance cameras.
  • Consider using a buzzer system and two-way video communication, especially during off-hours or when staff numbers are low.
  • Trust your instincts, and don’t hesitate to contact the police if you notice any suspicious behaviour.

This investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the relevant authorities.
