Attendees of this year’s Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) Conference will enjoy a discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing the jewellery trade today, courtesy of a long-time industry member and diamantaire.
Edward Asscher, past-president of the World Diamond Council (WDC) and vice-chair of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), will keynote the event, which takes place Oct. 20 to 22 at the at the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver.
Asscher, who is also a past president of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) and the International Diamond Council (IDC), belongs to one of Amsterdam’s most well-known families. He is chair of his family business, the Royal Asscher Diamond Company.
“Since 1854, the world famous Asscher family has helped create history’s most iconic jewels favoured by royalty,” CGA shares. “The Asscher family is well known for cutting the Cullinan diamond in 1907 and for developing the ever-popular Asscher cut.”
Nearly 100 years after the original Asscher cut was produced, Edward and his cousin, Joop, redesigned the Asscher cut with the addition of 16 facets, creating the 74-facet Royal Asscher Cut.
“Edward’s warmth, wisdom, wit, and passion are felt throughout the trade,” CGA says.
