Set in a Bulgari ring, this 5.30-carat fancy deep-blue diamond is expected to go for £1 million to £1.5 million ($1.6 million to $2.4 million Cdn).

A rare fancy deep-blue diamond is going on the auction block.

Expected to fetch £1 million to £1.5 million ($1.6 million to $2.4 million Cdn), the 5.30-carat cushion-cut diamond is set in a ‘Trombino’ ring made by Italian jeweller, Bulgari, and will lead Bonhams Fine Jewellery April 24 sale. Set horizontally, the blue stone is surrounded with brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds.

“Blue diamonds, especially those over five carats, are extremely rare to see on the market and continue to be highly sought-after,” said Jean Ghika, Bonhams’ director of jewellery for the United Kingdom and Europe.

“During the 1960s and 70s, Bulgari was well known for its imaginative settings and use of coloured diamonds, making them one of the most innovative and fashionable jewellers of the time. This ring epitomizes that ‘golden era’ of elegant simplicity and we are honoured to be handling the sale of such a unique gem.”

Less than one per cent of all mined diamonds are blue. They get their colour from boron.
