Canadian teen to race in Longines Future Ski Champions competition

The second annual Longines Future Ski Champions competition will be held in Val d’Isère, France, and 15-year-old Canadian Brianna Macdonald will be there.

Alpine Canada selected Macdonald, who trains at Osler Bluff Ski Club in Collingwood, Ont., as Canada’s only under-16 female representative in the program. A competitive skier since the age of 11, Macdonald has won numerous honours, including the overall series title at the Alpine Ontario U16 Provincials in March 2014 and the Nancy Green Trophy at the U14 Whistler Cup in April 2013.

The Longines Future Ski Champions competition is held on the official slope of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup—on the lower section of the legendary Oreiller-Killy run—and includes a giant slalom with two runs. The slope’s length is 30 to 40 seconds.

The four-day event, which includes one day of competition, gives skiers the same experience as competitors in the World Cup Alpine Skiing events organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). The timekeeping will be handled by the same Longines Timing as the World Cup and the award ceremony will also mirror the professionals’.

The winner will be presented with a trophy and a Longines timepiece. The titleholder’s national skiing federation will also receive a cheque to be used for promoting alpine skiing among young people in that country.
