The Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) will mark a milestone this year at its annual Gem Conference. Scheduled to hit Vancouver’s Terminal City Club from October 19 to 21, the event doubles as both a conference and a celebration of the association’s 60th anniversary.
CGA was founded in 1958 by gemmologist Dean S.M. Field, stemming from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A). Its purpose, according to Field, was to not only educate gemmologists, but also provide a forum through which they could meet and discuss their work.
This educational focus is still noticeable in the association’s modern-day activities. One of the primary features of the 60th anniversary conference, for instance, is its educational sessions. The event brings with it a roster of Canadian and international speakers with expertise in topics including gem testing, estate jewellery, synthetic diamonds, security, and diamond grading.
