Christie’s Magnificent Jewels fetches $30.3 million

A twin-stone fancy vivid blue diamond ring sold for more than $6.7 million at Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels auction.

Christie’s[2] New York Magnificent Jewels auction on April 16 achieved a total of US$30,315,875, with many lots selling for more than originally estimated.

A twin-stone fancy vivid blue diamond ring, featuring two pear-shaped, brilliant-cut, VS2-clarity stones weighing 3.06 and 2.61 carats, led the auction. The piece, which carried a pre-sale estimation of $6 to $8 million, realized $6,744,500.

Also among the notable results was a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs charm bracelet by Cartier[4]. The art deco gold and enamel piece sold for $118,750—more than seven times its estimate. Likewise, a gold, ruby, and diamond zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels[5] sold for $483,000 against a low pre-sale estimate of $150,000.

Overall, the auction saw significant prices for diamonds, both coloured and colourless, with six lots achieving more than $1 million. A 16.33-carat rectangular-cut diamond ring estimated between $1.2 and $2.2 million went for $1,575,000, while a 16.69-carat marquise-cut D colour ring from The Collection of Elizabeth Stafford sold for $1,455,000.

Christie’s sold 86 per cent of the lots offered.
