Commercial documents using the word ‘pearl’ without a qualifier will be understood to mean that it is natural.
That’s the conclusion of CIBJO’s seventh Special Report, released a week ahead of the 2013 Congress in Tel Aviv. Its goal is to create nomenclature that is clearly understood across cultural barriers.
Specifically, the report also states that cultured and imitation pearls must always be preceded by the respective qualifiers ‘cultured’ and ‘imitation.’ Although ‘pearl’ indicated on commercial documents will be considered natural, the report recommends using the qualifier ‘natural’ to avoid any confusion.
CIBJO Congress opens May 7.
