DDI appoints De Beers vet as honorary vice-chair

Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) has named Rory More O’Ferrall as its honorary vice-chair.

More O’Ferrall previously served as director of external affairs for the De Beers Group of Companies before he retired in 2007. In his new role at DDI, he will help build the organization’s corporate relations.

“We welcome Rory back to the DDI family and we are exceptionally pleased to have him and his expertise at the table,” said DDI’s board of directors chair, Ian Smillie. Â

DDI works directly with artisanal and small-scale miners who operate largely informally and outside the reach of standards to which mining companies would normally have access. Development diamonds are certified as being produced responsibly, safely, with respect of human and communities’ rights, and in conflict-free zones. They provide beneficiation to communities and payment of fair prices, converting them into instruments of development. There are 1.5 million artisanal diamond miners in Africa and South America.

“We have a responsibility to preserve the integrity of our trade and to ensure the welfare of those who work in our business,” said More O’Ferrall.

“It makes solid business sense for the entire industry. It’s important work, and I’m excited to renew my involvement with DDI.”

During his 36 years with De Beers, More O’Ferrall advised the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network on implementation of the Patriot Act as it relates to the diamond industry, as well as the U.S. Senate on the drafting of the Clean Diamonds Act.

He was instrumental in establishing the World Diamond Council (WDC) and, as one of its directors, was closely involved in the creation and development of the Kimberley Process (KP).
