Anglo American Group Foundation has pledged its support for the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) with a financial contribution.
“Support from the foundation is very important to us,” said DDI executive director, Dorothée Gizenga.
“We believe our objectives mirror those of the foundation and that together, we can bring real development to forgotten communities in Africa. The ‘fit’ for us is absolutely terrific.”
DDI—which received charitable status in Canada last year—works directly with the world’s 1.5 million artisanal and small-scale miners who operate largely informally and outside the reach of standards to which mining companies would normally have access.
Development diamonds are certified as being produced responsibly, safely, with respect of human and communities’ rights, and in conflict-free zones. They provide beneficiation to communities and payment of fair prices, converting them into instruments of development.
“Our support for the Diamond Development Initiative fits very well with our purpose to partner with leading development organizations, and we are delighted to be working together,” said foundation manager, Charlotte Edgeworth.
The Anglo American Group Foundation works to create sustainable livelihoods in the communities in which it operates.
