Diamond production at De Beers Canada’s mines totalled 1.14 million carats in 2009.
In its 2009 Report to Society, which summarizes the company’s contribution to sustainable development, De Beers also noted it spent $155 million on operations contracts at its Snap Lake mine, $116 million of which was supplied by northern business and $59 million by Aboriginal suppliers.
At the Victor mine in northern Ontario, the company spent $121 million on goods and services. Of that, Aboriginal businesses supplied $39 million.
Other highlights include:
• corporate social investment in communities near its operations totalling $3.8 million in cash, in-kind, and staff time in the form of education and youth literacy programs;
• the signing of a join impact benefit agreement (IBA) with Fort Albany First Nation and Kashechewan First Nation, both located in northern Ontario; and
• payments to eight IBA communities totalling $4.75 million for compensation, environmental monitoring, and scholarships.
“In support of our commitment to sustainable development in the communities in which we operate, De Beers Canada continues to invest in local programs that focus on business opportunities, education, training and employment, while operating our company in a socially and environmentally responsible way” said Chantal Lavoie, De Beers Canada acting chief executive officer (CEO). “These are key areas identified by our community partners, and are also areas where we think our company can make a difference.”
