This week, De Beers announced it will stop testing and exploration in the Saskatchewan mine at Snap Lake. The diamond company will begin flooding the site once granted government approval.
The decision was made based on failed attempts to agree to sales terms with potential buyers.
De Beers will attempt to preserve resources and the ore’s long term viability while reducing costs and environmental impact until a time when it’s suitable to begin operating again. Inventory and industrial equipment will be removed early in 2017. Displaced staff will be considered for other jobs within the De Beers operation. The Snap Lake mine project was set to cost De Beers over $20 million.
