Exotic woods, ceramic, fabrics, and even antique piano keys are just some of the materials used in a new jewellery exhibit inspired by notable Canadian women.
Order of Ontario recipient Donald A. Stuart’s latest exhibit, Homage, features more than 30 necklaces honouring women like Margaret Atwood, Diana Krall, Belinda Stronach, Kim Campbell, Laura Secord, Betty Fox, and Catriona Le May Doan.
The collection is on display at the Elmwood Spa in Toronto. Part of the proceeds from the show will go toward the YWCA Elm Centre, a 300-bed residential community offering affordable housing for low-income women and their families, women with mental health and addiction issues, and Aboriginal families.
“This exhibit is special to us not only because the art pieces are exquisite, but also because it allows us to recognize the contributions of celebrated Canadian women in support of vulnerable Canadian women,” says Marie Picton, the spa’s executive manager.
Stuart notes the one-of-a-kind art pieces reflect each woman’s achievements.
“Throughout the centuries, Canada has been blessed with many outstanding women,” he says. “Through my research, I realized how much we are indebted to them in shaping our nation.”
The exhibit runs until March 31. It is available for viewing by appointment by calling Dominique Giliberti at (416) 323-4275 or e-mailing dgiliberti@elmwoodspa.com[2].
