Renowned designer Scott Kay has died of a heart attack at the age of 57.
He is survived by his wife, Regina, and their three children, Tiffany, Jordan, and Troy,
“We are heartbroken for his loss,” the family wrote on the Scott Kay website. “He was and always will be a loving husband, a championing father, and an incredibly talented artist whose creativity touched the lives of many. We are comforted in knowing Scott will continue to be with us forever through his larger-than-life spirit.
“As we find our way forward, we will always be inspired by his hard work, conviction, and infectious personality. We will honour Scott by continuing to nurture the family he loved and to enrich the legacy he built. As Scott would have wanted, we will forge on with passion, zest, a sense of humour, and the stubbornness to ensure that we ‘never compromise.'”
Generally credited with reinvigorating platinum as a metal for designing jewellery, Kay got his start at New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology where he fought to get in after his application was rejected. He brought with him a homemade ring he had fashioned from a lug nut he found in the street and a plea that he be accepted into the jewellery program, which he was.
His death comes less than two years after appointing David Minster as chief executive officer (CEO) of the company that bears his name. At the time, Kay had said he wanted to focus on designing, as well as pursue his other passions of writing, public speaking, and teaching.
