This summer, the Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) is offering a new class that will help gemmologists determine whether their diamonds are the real deal.
The two-day Diamond and Diamond Imitation Course kicks off on May 26 in Toronto, running from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on both days. It will cover the distinguishing features of real diamonds as well as synthetics and the many types of imitations, including cubic zirconia (CZ), synthetic spinel and moissanite, and strontium titanate.
Attendees will learn how to identify each type using the naked eye as well as equipment such as a loupe, refractometer, thermal conductivity diamond tester, polariscope, ultraviolet (UV) light, microscope, and spectroscope. They are expected to either bring or purchase a 10x triplet jeweller’s loupe, gemmological tweezers, gem cloth, and flashlight.
The course will be held at the CGA classroom in the city’s downtown. For more information and to check out CGA’s other offerings, click here.
