Students from Canada’s Northwest Territories and Nunavut’s West Kitikmeot region will get a helping hand, thanks to a $25,000 donation from the Diavik mine and the Yellowknife Community Foundation.
“The establishment of the Diavik Community Scholarship Fund strengthens Diavik’s commitment to northern skills development, which underpins our approach to sustainable development,” said Niels Kristensen, president and chief operating officer (COO) of Diavik Diamond Mines Inc.
Diavik is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and Harry Winston Diamond Ltd.
The fund gives priority to aboriginal students seeking a college diploma, university degree, or related trade certification program in the resources industry.
Diavik’s scholarship programs have awarded more than $2 million to residents of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut’s West Kitikmeot region over the past 10 years.
The mine has participation agreements with five neighbouring aboriginal groups, as well as scholarships for Diavik employee family members.
