Saskatchewan-based Embee Diamonds is set to produce a diamond brand that will help deliver humanitarian support to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Under the agreement, Embee Diamonds will license the use one of its diamond shapes to Calgary-based African Diamonds for Development (ADFD). The diamonds will be marketed under the ‘Congo Star’ banner and cut at Embee’s facilities in Prince Albert.
“Over the years, we’ve been exploring additional diamond lines that could complement our existing Sirius Star range of 100 per cent pure Canadian diamonds,” says Evert P. Botha, chief executive officer (CEO) for Embee Diamonds. “The Congo Star diamonds will be made right here in Canada by our team of diamond cutters.”
Twenty per cent of the gross profits will be returned to the communities from which the diamonds were exported via the ADFD Development Fund, providing humanitarian support and services, such as infrastructure, housing, social assistance, health services, brick manufacturing plants, water treatment facilities, and solar power. The establishment of DRC agricultural training and production of agricultural products and aquaculture projects are also expected to be supported.
“We are proud of what we have accomplished thus far and are thrilled to be part of changing the lives of millions of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo through our numerous development programs” says ADFD CEO, David Schaffer.
“The Congo Star will be worn with pride, helping eliminate any stigma from historic practices in the African diamond industry.”
