An alleged murder plot involving two Toronto cash-for-gold buyers has grabbed headlines.

Toronto Police are investigating an alleged murder-for-hire involving two of the city’s highest profile cash-for-gold buyers.

Investigators say a 71-year-old employee of Harold the Jewellery Buyer allegedly hired a man to kill Omni Jewelcrafters owner, Jack Berkovits, in an attempt to snuff out his main rival in the gold buyback business.

According to news reports, Berkovits met with a man posing as a potential customer in late July in a pizzeria. The two made small talk before police say the man revealed the murder plot to Berkovits after having second thoughts. The man also allegedly went to police with the same story.

Harold Gerstel—who is not facing charges—denies the allegations against his employee.

Maria Konstan is facing two counts of threatening death and two counts of counselling to commit an indictable offence. Berkovits did not respond to a request for comment.
