Abrasives, burs, and saw frames are just a few tools of the trade lining the shelves at European Design Jewellery.
“We’ve always had coloured gemstones, findings, finished jewellery, and equipment,” says Daniel Kundakci.
“Now, we’re adding tools to offer our customers a one-stop-shop experience. We wanted to supplement our equipment division to carry every tool a jeweller needs. In general, people want to be able to go somewhere and buy everything they want. Time is short and they really want a quick shopping experience. We want the same for our clients.”
To celebrate, European Design held an open house in August, which happened to coincide with the unveiling of its new 186-m2 (2000-sf) space, an extension of their current location at Toronto’s 21 Dundas Square.
The family-run company had its beginnings 30 years ago when Daniel’s father, Mike, a goldsmith, emigrated from Turkey. After finding a lack of material to use in his own designs, Mike got into the wholesale game and began offering gemstones. Over the years, European Design expanded to finished jewellery and equipment, such as laser welders and engravers.
When a Toronto tool company shut down its operations earlier this year, the Kundakci clan saw it as a business opportunity, and recruited the help of two of that company’s salespeople, hitting the ground running with an established customer base.
“We always wanted to get into tools and thought this would be the best time to do it,” Daniel adds.
