It’s not every day you come face to face with royalty.
But when 23-year-old Emily Wojna was presented to Princess Anne, she had a little something with her—a one-of-a-kind bracelet made especially for the occasion.
Fashioned from Canadian gold, the piece features an Ontario diamond and blue sodalite, a semi-precious stone native to the province. Wojna—a Georgian College graduate from Amherstview, Ont.—won the $2500 commission to design the bracelet through The Princess Royal Award. The contest was launched by the City of Barrie, where the school is located.
The Queen’s daughter was in town to inspect her regiment—the Grey and Simcoe County Foresters—and dedicate three memorial benches at the future Military Heritage Park commemorating the Canadian Forces. The Rotary Club of Barrie also unveiled a special monument in honour of the visit, the first for a royal in more than 100 years.
“She wasn’t nearly as reserved as I was expecting,” said Wojna of Princess Anne, who also holds the title, The Princess Royal.
“I was able to shake her hand and tell her about the design. I think she was surprised with the amount of passion I put into the project and the thought I put behind the elements of the design.”
In honour of the regiment, Wojna included its motto “tenacious and versatile” in the bracelet’s design, as well as an equestrian element, marking a love of horses she shares with the royal. The princess competed on Britain’s equestrian team at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.
