The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced more than 140 scholarships for the 2011 season.

The Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA’s) scholarship season is ramping up with more than 140 spots available, including two $10,000 awards from Tiffany & Co.

“There are so many talented people with a love for gems and jewellery who don’t have the financial resources for gemmological education,” said Bev Berthoty, GIA’s institute relations manager. “Helping these scholarship recipients become professionals who can serve their clients and the industry with their expertise is yet another way GIA manifests its mission to protect the public trust.”

Canadian residents/citizens can apply for any of the international scholarships, which include distance education and on-campus learning at GIA London, GIA India, and GIA Thailand. Only U.S. citizens/permanent residents can apply for U.S. on-campus scholarships.

The scholarships apply to a number of programs, such as jewellery manufacturing arts, the graduate gemmologist (GG) and accredited jewellery professional programs, as well as pearl and lab classes. Tiffany’s scholarships, however, can be used for any GIA education programs.

“We did not put any restrictions on these awards so they would be available to as many students as possible,” said Mike Kowalski, Tiffany president and chief executive officer (CEO). “We believe a successful company has a responsibility to the greater community, whether that be concern for the environment and human rights practices, or helping individuals become successful in the gem and jewellery industry, as is the case with these scholarships.”

Applications must be completed and returned by Oct. 30. For more information, visit www.gia.edu/scholarships[2].
