Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says it is launching an investigation and suspending its sealing services after discovering a diamond that did not match the data label in the sealing packet.
The lab says it has contracted an outside corporate investigation firm to examine the circumstances surrounding the submission to determine the source of the sealing packet.
According to a report in JCKOnline, the diamond sealing service is generally used for investment purposes and only one-tenth of one per cent of clients request it.
Anyone with concerns about a GIA-sealed diamond may submit the unopened sealing packet to the lab for examination. GIA will verify the diamond matches the report information and return it in a sealing packet at no charge.
GIA also announced it was suspending the issuance of duplicate reports at all locations.
