There are some things you just can’t let go of, or so it would seem.

A 50.01-carat rectangular-cut potentially flawless diamond ring owned not once, but twice by Laurence Graff is back with the famed jeweller following Christie’s New York’s Magnificent Jewels auction. Estimated at $7 to $10 million US, the ring fetched $8,370,500.

“This is the third time I have owned this beautiful diamond and I am as thrilled today as I was the first time,” Graff said.

“Diamonds of this exceptional calibre have a life and legacy that carry on beyond us all. This is one of the finest D-colour diamonds in the world and I am delighted to have it back again.”

The 300-lot auction also saw a new per-carat record for a Kashmir sapphire, with the sale of an 8.91-carat stone for $1,370,500 US or $154,000 per carat.

A rare 3.15-carat fancy reddish-orange diamond also set a new world auction record and a new per-carat record price of $666,200 US. The stone sold for $2,098,500, well above its low estimate of $700,000.

“A D-colour diamond of 50.01 carats last sold by Christie’s New York in 2005 and purchased by Laurence Graff for $4.2 million has once again been purchased by Mr. Graff for $8.4 million, demonstrating the increasing strength and stability of the global diamond market,” said Rahul Kadakia, head of jewellery for Christie’s Americas and Switzerland.

“Over $163 million of superb jewels sold under our gavel this year at Christie’s New York, with new and established collectors competing at the very highest levels.”
