Members of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) with mining facilities like this one must be verified under the group’s ‘Mining Supplement’ for responsible practices.

The Responsible Jewellery Council’s (RJC’s) implementation documents for certifying ethical, social, and environmental practices in the diamond and gold jewellery supply chain are now available.

Under the ‘RJC System,’ council members are required to submit to auditing by accredited, third-party auditors who verify conformance with the group’s Code of Practices (COP). Those verified as conforming to the code become certified members of the Responsible Jewellery Council.

The RJC was formerly known as the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices (CRJP).

The group says the system is expected to be up and running in the spring of 2009 with the training of independent auditors and accreditation of audit firms.

Members with mining facilities must be verified under the ‘Mining Supplement,’ which is currently undergoing public consultation and is expected to be finalized by March 2009. The supplement is part of the COP and includes requirements specific to the mining industry.
