Executives from various sectors of the gem and jewellery industry assembled in Cambridge, Mass., last month to hone their leadership skills. From June 25 to 28, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) continued its annual tradition of bringing decision-makers to Harvard Business School (HBS) to participate in its global leadership program.

This year’s program carried the theme, ‘Unleashing the Power of People: Genuine Leadership.’ Using HBS’s case study method, it illuminated some of the ways participants could foster leadership qualities they admire. A total of 42 company CEOs and senior executives attended, coming from 11 different countries.

“What a great opportunity to be part of such an experience at the Harvard Business School along with a powerful cross-section of industry leaders,” said program participant Stanley Zale, Stuller’s vice-president of diamond and gemstone procurement. “It was engaging and thought-provoking and insightful.”

Delivered by Harvard faculty, the program leverages both new research and established best practices. A similar HBS educational offering will be available at GIA’s International Gemological Symposium in Carlsbad, Calif., this October.

“We are thrilled to offer a leadership immersion program with Harvard Business School,” said Susan Jacques, CEO of GIA. “Since 2014, GIA’s Global Leadership Program has helped industry leaders develop their fundamental tools for global business—strategy, customer centricity, and leadership.”

On completion, all program participants received a certificate from HBS.
