The International Diamond Council has published new rules pertaining to synthetic diamond nomenclature.
New rules pertaining to diamond terminology are outlined in the latest version of the International Diamond Council’s (IDC’s) “IDC Rules for Grading Diamonds.”

Incorporating changes spurred by industry-wide consultations on diamond nomenclature, the document amends and corrects revisions previously approved by the IDC board.

The rules allow for diamond grading laboratories to use “laboratory-created,” “laboratory-grown” and “synthetic” to describe a synthetic diamond.

“It is essential we keep our focus on bringing forward shared and transparent nomenclature, based on technological and other advances in the diamond industry, with the purpose to consolidate the trust of the consumer and help to maintain a stable market for diamonds,” said IDC chair Stephane Fischler.

The updated rules are expected to be made available for downloading from IDC’s website.
