The ornate, heritage-laced jewellery of India’s top designers went on full display at the second annual India International Jewellery Week (IIJW).

Models and celebrities took to the catwalk, sashaying in the latest jewellery and showing off the hottest trends from 35 of India’s top designers and design houses.

IIJW is designed to promote India as the jewellery destination for Asia and the world, as well as a celebration of the country’s status as an exporter and manufacturer. The show is organized by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

Shri Subodh Kant Sahai, minister of state for tourism, helped kick off the event, which also showcases the designs of up-and-comers.

“Jewellery has been one of the many fascinating attractions for foreigners visiting India, besides the myriad tourist spots that our country offers,” Sahai said at IIJW’s inauguration. “I am happy to announce the celebration of India as the global destination for jewellery design at India International Jewellery Week 2011, which is poised to take the country to greater heights of recognition as the largest manufacturer and supplier of diamonds in the world, and at the same time, one that forecasts trends in jewellery designs for the international markets.”
