A Canadian diamond bourse may be in the works following town hall meetings in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.

It was a packed house at a town hall meeting in Toronto looking at the feasibility of a Canadian diamond bourse.

Representatives from the diamond mining, manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, and service industry, along with the federal and provincial governments, gathered to discuss the specifics of what a bourse would entail.

Presented by the Canadian Diamond Bourse Working Group, the meeting covered the elements of the study, the various services being contemplated, and an implementation schedule should the formation of a Canadian diamond bourse move forward.

Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) president and CEO Ken Mulhall said attendance was greater than expected.

“The Canadian Diamond Bourse Working Group was very pleased with the turnout and the feedback provided by the participants,” he said, adding about 60 people attended, nearly double what organizers had anticipated.

“Following the presentation, there was a lively and energetic discussion that covered a number of subjects, including the need for a bourse, breath and depth of membership, the need for the industry to speak with one voice, and some of the advantages and disadvantages of having a bourse.”

The initiative is backed by Northam Diamonds, Gem Star, The Libman Company, the Ministry of Development and Mines, and others.

Town hall meetings were also held in Vancouver and Montreal late last month.
