SB_Acropolis-and-Athens-by-[1]Greece will set the scene for an inaugural gemmological and jewellery conference organized by four industry groups.

Held from June 27 to 28 at Divani Palace & Thalasso Hotel in Athens, the event is the first in a series of annual conferences to be held in a different Mediterranean location every year.

Lectures will be offered by independent laboratory gemmologists, appraisers, and synthesis experts on a broad range of subjects. In particular, seminars will focus on coloured diamonds, pearls, melee and large synthetic diamonds, and coloured gemstone treatments and values as they pertain to jewellery appraisers, jewellers, and gem dealers.

The conference is being organized by Independent Gemological Laboratory (Greece); CGL-Swiss Canadian Gem Lab Inc. (Canada), led by Jewellery Business gemmology columnist, Branko Deljanin; the Association of Independent Jewellery Valuers (United Kingdom); and the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (United States).

Specific topics include:

• Production, gemmological characteristics, and value of Argyle coloured diamonds;

• Testing and identification of melee synthetic diamonds (loose and jewellery) and pearls;

• Update on production of synthetic HPHT and CVD diamonds and how to identify and value them;

• Characteristics of Mozambique rubies compared to Burmese rubies, as well as the impact the term ‘pigeon’s blood’ has on value of high-quality rubies.

• A practical workshop organized by CGL-Swiss Canadian Gem Lab on the use of standard (e.g. UV lamp, portable polariscope, and microscope) and advanced instruments (e.g. VIS and Raman spectrometers) in detecting more than 50 synthetic HPHT-grown and CVD-grown and treated diamonds.

Speakers include: Thomas Hainschwang (Lichtenstein); Francesca Peretti (Switzerland); Branko Deljanin (Canada); Wolf Kuehn (Canada); Gail Brett Levine (U.S.); Fazil Ozen (Turkey); Kym Hughes (Australia); and Joe C.C. Yuan (Taiwan).
