Industry honours CJA at 100-year gala

The evening began with a cocktail reception and silent auction in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s (AGO’s) artwork-adorned Walker Court.

The Canadian Jewellers Association[3] (CJA) marked its 100th anniversary in style at a glamourous gala on April 28. The 2018 Jewellers’ Ball[4] brought together CJA members from across the industry to eat, drink, and celebrate the association’s centennial milestone.

Held at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario[5] (AGO), the event opened with a cocktail reception and silent auction, inviting attendees to mingle amidst historic works of art in the gallery’s stunning Walker Court. Hockey tickets, household items, wine, and—of course—jewellery were on offer to raise funds for the association.

The festivities then continued with dinner and entertainment in the glowing Baillie Court. Renowned Canadian stage artist Robert Pilon[6] kept the audience spellbound with captivating renditions of songs from The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. Toronto mayor John Tory and Pierre Akkelian of Canadian Gem[7] also made speeches commending the association for its long history and continuing accomplishments.

Dinner in Baillie Court was accompanied by entertainment from Canadian stage artist Robert Pilon, as well as speeches and an awards presentation.

Andreea Murgu, the winner of CJA’s 100th Anniversary Design Contest, was also honoured in a special presentation. Murgu holds a jewellery and textiles degree from NSCAD University[9] and used an emotionally evocative approach to create a piece fitting the contest’s theme, ‘Colours of Spring.’
