Former Twenty-Four Karat Club president Mervyn ‘Bing’ Levinter has died at the age of 90.

He had been in deteriorating health for the last few years, and was a patient at Sunnybrook Hospital for the last five.

An industry veteran, Levinter led Lipman & Silver Company—a manufacturer of silver and silver-plated hollowware—after the death of his father-in-law, Henry Lipman. Always one to be involved, Levinter became a member of the Canadian Jewellers Twenty-Four Karat Club in 1962, serving as its president from 1981 to 1982. He continued to attend club events, even while a patient at Sunnybrook.

“Bing was a true gentleman, who added much to our industry as a whole and was an asset to our club,” said current president, Jeff Morrison of 925 Solutions. “He will be missed by many, and will be fondly remembered.”

As a committed member of the jewellery industry, Levinter devoted a great deal of his time to the Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA), which honoured him with the inaugural presentation of the President’s Award in 1999 for his years of dedication and support.

A proud veteran of the Canadian forces during the Second World War, Levinter is survived by his wife, Vicke, and his children, Robert and Marcie.
