Kim Markwart has been appointed chair of the Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) for 2012-2013.
As co-owner and manager of Markwart Jewellers in northeast Saskatchewan, Kim is a veteran of the Canadian jewellery industry. The store was established in 1960 by her husband, Trent’s, parents, the late Ernest and Irene Markwart.
Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Kim earned a degree in economics from the University of Regina, Luther College. After getting married, she began helping her husband at the store during peak selling seasons. The couple soon purchased the remaining shares in the business.
In addition to overseeing marketing, sales, purchasing, and development, Kim is also active in the community, working with the Northeast Health Care Initiative, TMSS Scholarship Fund, and various groups and organizations. She has also served on the Chamber of Commerce, The United Appeal, Board of Education, Band Parents Association, School Community Association, Football Booster Club, and Skate Tisdale.
The couple’s three children—ages 15, 12, and nine—are familiar faces around the store, doing everything from making bows and boxes to engraving.
