Toronto police have busted a distraction theft ring targeting retailers that included jewellers.
One man and three women face 40 charges after a two-month long investigation.
Police allege the suspects worked in groups of two to four, targeting display cases at retail outlets, including jewellery stores. While one person distracted store employees, the others unlocked display cases with a key and removed items.
Investigators say the suspects are responsible for nine thefts in Toronto valued at $45,000. Search warrants resulted in the seizure of additional property valued at $50,000.
The investigation brought together officers from services in York, Peel, and Halton Regions, Hamilton, Ottawa, as well as Alberta and British Columbia. Police believe there may be more victims.

Jowanna Dixon, 49, of Toronto, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime”“over. She was released on an appearance notice that requires a court appearance at a future date.
A warrant has been issue for a fourth person, Tyrone Stewart, 35, of Toronto.
Police are asking retailers to report similar thefts that may be linked to this group. Investigators say Shamachuk has allegedly committed offences with and without a hijab.
