Online auction to support Hurricane Sandy initiatives

A group of jewellery designers—including four Canadians—is banding together to help Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Organized by New York City-based Greenwich Jewelers, Sparkle for Sandy Relief Auction will benefit Waves for Water’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative.

“As a native New Yorker, seeing the destruction in neighbourhoods like our home, the financial district, and beachfront communities—the Rockaways, Coney Island, and the Jersey Shore—was heartbreaking,” said Greenwich Jewelers owner Jennifer Gandia.

“I found Waves for Water, a grassroots organization that’s done extensive work in disaster areas around the globe and I wanted to support their Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative.”

One hundred per cent of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to Waves for Water, which will provide long-term, hands-on support, resources, and funding for the rebuilding of New York and New Jersey beach communities.

Toronto designers Anne Sportun/Experimetal Jewellery, Hera Jewellery, and Reena Ahluwalia (for Royal Asscher) have donated jewellery to the auction, along with Pyrrha Design of Vancouver.

“We heard first-hand from many of our friends and colleagues in New York State and Connecticut how devastating the effects of the storm were on their families and friends; how utterly caught off guard they were to lose electricity for weeks on end, for cafés and restaurants to lose all their stock due to power outages and for electrical fires to destroy homes,” says Anne Sportun. “You put yourself in their shoes for just one moment and hope that assistance would be sent on our behalf should such a disaster befall us. We were honoured to be asked to contribute to the Waves for Water’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative organized by Greenwich Jewelers and thank them for generously contributing their time and extraordinary efforts for the cause.”

Bidding for the online auction[2] closes Dec. 6. Items can also be viewed in person at Greenwich Jewelers at 64 Trinity Place in New York City on Dec. 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
