Pantone Color Institute has announced 2018 will be vivid in Ultra Violet. Creativity, individuality, and counterculture are just a few of the ideas the organization says are attached to its latest colour of the year.
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Leatrice Eiseman, the institute’s executive director. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
In a press release, Pantone said the colour evoked mindfulness, images of the cosmos, and such lofty themes as ambition and possibility. The institute also noted Ultra Violet’s association to figures such as Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, as well as its ability to pair beautifully with shades such as gold, green, and grey.
“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design,” said Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s vice president. “It’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”
