SBa_Project-Poag-2015-Winne[1]A peridot and moonstone ring took the top spot at the third annual Project Poag Jewellery Challenge.

Designed by Lori Hawkrigg of London, Ont., the piece garnered the greatest number of votes on the jewellery retailer’s Facebook page. Now, Poag[2] will create the ring based on her original design sketch.

“The success we’ve had with the Project Poag Jewellery Challenge is incredible,” said James Poag, owner of Poag Jewellers in Strathroy, Ont. “I am always impressed by the level of artistic talent we have in our region, and it’s so exciting for us to spotlight it.

“The entries this year were outstanding, but we loved Lori’s intriguing combination of the cushion-cut peridot, the halo of moonstones, and the filigree on the silver band and setting. It has a truly unique look and elegance that I know will look fantastic in the finished piece!”

Promoted through Facebook, the design competition garnered 15 entries from Ontario-area contestants. Only one vote separated the top two finalists. In the end, Hawkrigg’s design won by a vote of 72 to 71 over her nearest competitor.

Hawkrigg said her inspiration for the design came from her desire to own a ring with classic and timeless look.

“Green is my absolute favourite colour,” she said. “And the peridot has such a lovely earthy green tone. The moonstone element was added for a unique twist, and the filigree design on the side gave character to an otherwise wide and simple band.”

Poag said the competition is a great way to promote custom-made jewellery and highlight the skill that goes into it.

“People love to have a unique piece of jewellery, something made just for them,” he added. “This event is a great way to showcase what we love to do.”
