A CBC documentary looks at the life of a watchmaker and the only place left to study the craft in Canada, École Nationale d’Horlogerie in Trois-Rivières, Que.

A CBC radio report is shining a spotlight on Canada’s last watchmaking school.

As reported in Jewellery Business[2] late last year, the Ministère de l’Éducation des Loisirs et du Sport recommended shutting down École Nationale d’Horlogerie in Trois-Rivières, Que., due to low enrolment.

With an average of 12 to 15 students signing up for the program, the Quebec government said the numbers did not meet its minimum of 25 to 30 students a year to be sustainable.

A decision on the school’s fate was expected in December, but according to Robert Plourde, an instructor at the school and himself a graduate of its program, it was held off until February. In the meantime, enrolment for the year is now up to 26.

CBC reporter David Gutnick’s documentary, ‘You Can Put Time in Your Hands’ can be heard here[3].
