Two rare chronographs are set to steal the show at the autumn edition of Sotheby’s Hong Kong’s Important Watches[2] sale.
The first of the two headlining pieces is a platinum Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Zenith Caliber with a mother-of-pearl dial. This recently discovered timepiece is thought to be the only one of its kind, and Sotheby’s anticipates it will fetch US$420,000 to US$767,000.
Also on offer is a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, featuring moon phases and a pink gold case. Only five other examples of this series are known to be cased in pink gold, and of the six, this one is considered the best thanks to its pristine condition. Originally retailed by Tiffany & Co.[3] in 1972, then auctioned for more than US$750,000 in 2005, the watch is now expected to draw US$1.5 to US$2.3 million.
“We are most privileged to have this opportunity to handle and offer these two amazing timepieces this season,” said Sam Hines, worldwide head of watches for Sotheby’s[4]. “Not only are they rare and important pieces in their own respective rights, but they also reflect the rich history of two of the hottest watch companies in today’s market.”
A public exhibition will be held in Hall 1 of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre[5] from September 28 to October 1, followed by the auction itself on October 2.
